People
History
1973
Brian Townshend started Motorwell Services – a small garage just outside the town of Rangiora that serviced and repaired cars, trucks, tractors and machinery. We had connections with Hydralada and Hustler Tractor mounted forklifts and started learning about selling.
1990 – 1994
The business moved from Boys Road to 12 Albert Street in Rangiora. Bought out NC4WD (North Canterbury Four Wheel Drive) The business grew and Brian’s sons, Richard, Mark and Lincoln came into it one by one. In 1994 the Townshend family had this inspiration of starting a business selling truck and machinery mirrors. We wanted a change, so took the big step of selling shatterproof mirrors to transport and machinery operators. Of course, they were a great product to sell - but not being breakable, meant we had very little repeat business! So next came standard glass mirrors used in the industry, then came all sorts of other associated products like truck and safety lighting, alloy loading ramps and so on.
2002
Brian and Lincoln were now full time in the parts side of the business (Transquip) so we decided to sell the garage Motorwell Services and all concentrate on growing TransQuip. We moved to new premises at Edward Street, Rangiora. The range was constantly being expanded to suit our customers’ demands and now included site gear like Trench shoring
2007
TransQuip stared in the North Island with its first Salesman Rodney Kelland.
2010 - 2012
The Canterbury earthquakes hit in 2010 and 2011 and TransQuip was in the thick of it helping customers out wherever they could. With Canterbury shaking like it was, no one would go into a trench without protection. The demand for trench shoring soared and our Rangiora premises became too small, so we leased some land in Christchurch, and set up 2 containers and a yard, mainly to give our customers better service with the trench shoring.
2013
The property that we are now in, (2 Edmonton Road, Hornby, Christchurch) came up for sale and we purchased it. This is in an excellent location with many of our Christchurch customers being in the Hornby and Sockburn areas. As well, we are near to the main courier and freight companies which are very important for dispatching our products throughout New Zealand quickly.
2016 - 2018
We started a branch in Auckland. For the past 9 years, we only had a rep servicing Auckland and we had realised that the big demand for our products in the North Island, so to service that better we set up a small branch in a space at another business on Mount Smart Road, Penrose. After 6 months we moved to our own unit on Great South Road, Penrose. The 3rd generation of the family started working in the business and with some other great staff, many changes were brought about to update our systems and methods.
2019
Auckland had grown and our warehouse space had become too small, so we made another move into a bigger unit on the same block at 761 Great South Road, Penrose. Now we store a lot of our stock in Auckland and this is the base 5 staff work from.
2020
Covid stuck in March and the team worked from home or alone in the warehouse dispatching essential products. The webstore proved itself in this time of ‘social distancing’
2021
Now we have a great team of 17. We couldn’t have come this far without our great team of loyal customers, and our fantastic team of staff.
