How to: Assemble Guardian Trench Shields Modular Box (Manhole)

Huntley and Harley from the Guardian team have made an easy-to-follow video that shows how quick and simple it is to put together a modular box (manhole).

Watch it here, or read below, and we'll break it down for you.

People:
You'll need two people to assemble these.

Equipment:

  1. Lengths of Modular Guardian Trench Shield Panels - as required to suit depth and rating.
  2. Corner brackets
  3. Lifting eye brackets
  4. Pins
  5. A 4-leg chain sling (If you don't have one or need another, TransQuip can supply one - See our range Here)
  6. Your digger
  7. Your hi-vis and work gloves (Huntley and Harley used cut-proof gloves for the job but it's down to personal choice. Quality safety gloves are available from TransQuip - Browse our range Here)

Total Assembly Time: Approx 10 minutes

How To:

  1. Put two panels together at right angles, with a slight gap so the corner bracket can be slotted into place.
  2. Slot in the corner bracket and secure with the 4 pins provided.
  3. Repeat. Put the next two panels together and slot the corner brackets into place.
  4. Then, begin on the second layer, sliding the panels onto the vertical rails.
  5. Put the top pins in place to secure.
  6. Once the manhole has reached the required height, put the lifting brackets on.
  7. Putting in the lifting eyes is similar to putting the corner brackets on. Just slide into place and secure with the pins provided.
  8. Lift into place using the digger. Complete whilst in place if required. Continue adding more layers to increase the height/depth as required.

Job done!

Tips:

  • Always check that the holes align ready to push the pins through.
  • Put the 4 bottom pins in place first when doing the corner brackets. Then the top pins when adding the second layer.
  • If you keep the 4th side lower initially, you won't need a ladder for access.
  • The smaller the manhole, the deeper you can go while adhering to the ratings.
  • Spare pins are available from TransQuip if you damage or lose your pins.
  • Modular boxes are available from TransQuip for sale or hire.
  • Certified to American standards for manhole shoring, the modular boxes are suited to all soil types - from sand to clay.
