TransQuip is helping turn Aotearoa into a sea of pink this Pink Shirt Day to Kōrero Mai, Kōrero Atu, Mauri Tū, Mauri Ora – Speak Up, Stand Together, Stop Bullying!

Celebrated annually around the globe, Pink Shirt Day began in Canada in 2007 when two students took a stand against bullying, after a peer was bullied for wearing a pink shirt.

In Aotearoa, Pink Shirt Day aims to create schools, workplaces and communities where all people feel safe, valued and respected.

I am very fortunate to have worked with TransQuip prior to becoming its general manager as an advising consultant. An outcome of the consultancy was the development of TransQuip’s Vision, Mission and Values.

It is the Vision and Values that drives the culture and future of TransQuip and I am very proud to be a part of it!

How long have you worked at TransQuip?

I have been the General Manager at TransQuip for six months.

What do you like about the culture and working at TransQuip?

TransQuip is an exciting progressive family owned business. The “Can Do” attitude of the founder of TransQuip ‘Brian Townshend’ grew the business from the ground up with a can do attitude that has been adopted by his three sons and wider family. It is this attitude with a real passion for the industry that has made TransQuip the success it is today and positions it extremely well to be a significant player in the future.

What are your career aspirations and goals?

I am a very passionate leader and my aspirations and goals are to impart my skills to the management team and owners so that they can grow the business of TransQuip to become the leader in its field.

What do you enjoy outside of work?

I am a fitness fanatic and love spending time at leisure and actively with my family. My vice is chess which I play online with my brothers overseas and my sons (my wife is not so keen on the amount I play chess).

What for you was the best part of the last year at TransQuip?

The move into Auckland with the presence of our new distribution centre on 761 Great South Road, Penrose. In addition, we launched our new website and structured our business into clear categories: Lights – Mirrors – Hire – Safety – Ramps – Site and Other.

What is your favourite quote/joke?

Success is not final, failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts.

What do you like about the culture and working at TransQuip?

The culture is great, very fun and there is a ‘can do’ positivity to it that is rare these days. We all work as a team and I’m never short of getting answers to the wide range of requests from clients while out on the road.

What are your career aspirations and goals?

Within TransQuip I would like to increase my territory’s business to a level where I run a team. I enjoy leading by example and passing on knowledge, helping others progress and grow.....

How long have you worked at TransQuip?

Two and a half months.

I enjoy leading by example and passing on knowledge, helping others progress and grow. This will give me even more experience and skills to progress into a senior management role or run my own business in the future.

What do you enjoy outside of work?

Time with my family. I also enjoy the outdoors and follow a wide range of sport. I like playing golf and am starting squash again soon.

What has been the best part so far TransQuip?

I’ve enjoyed getting to know the wide range of clients, getting out and about offering a personal service as well as learning more about the transport and civil industries and how we can provide solutions.

What is your favourite quote?

“Impossible is just a word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they’ve been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It’s an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It’s a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.”

My sales manager has played a big part in building my confidence & knowledge in my role as an internal sales member.

What are your career aspirations and goals?
My plan is set. There is no doubt about it I am going to retire at age 55.

What do you enjoy outside of work?
Like many other families my time outside of work is taken up by ferrying my children to and from school, sport and extracurricular events, I enjoy supporting my children in everything that they do.

What for you was the best part of the last year at TransQuip?
Working towards the opening of the Auckland Depot.

What is your favourite quote/joke?
It’s not a joke or a quote but when I answer the phone and  say…”Welcome to TransQuip - your speaking with Angel…” More often than not there is usually an awkward silence as people are thinking if they heard right…Angel??? To break the silence my answer is often “No you’re not in heaven yet…”

From what I have seen everyone has a ‘Can Do’ attitude which explains why TransQuip has gone from strength to strength over their many years in business.

What are your career aspirations and goals?
At the moment I am purely focused on getting to know our clients and their needs as well as prospecting for new business opportunities. I’m hoping there will be other opportunities within the company later on where I may mentor and pass on my knowledge and help others.

What do you enjoy outside of work?
I have an interest in classic cars and hope to get back into restoring a car again soon. I also really enjoy a great novel, my partner and I are both film nuts. I always enjoy the various projects around the home. I used to do tons of cycling so I’m trying to inspire myself to get back on the saddle.

What is your favourite saying?

How long have you worked at TransQuip?

I’ve just completed my 8th week here at TransQuip.

What do you like about the culture and working at TransQuip?

There is a high level of engagement and work ethic within the team here at TransQuip and I have been fortunate to have their total support as I become more familiar with my role. There is also a great depth of experience and knowledge around the industries and customers we service and support. I’m impressed with the vast range of products that we have on offer with many of them specialist products unique to TransQuip.

What are your career aspirations and goals?

I’m stoked to have the opportunity to play a key role in supporting the development and growth of TransQuip here in Auckland and the northern region. This is a great opportunity and for me, it is about enjoying what I do and being part of a team working together to achieve the same goals.

What do you enjoy outside of work?

I enjoy a round of golf with friends most Saturdays. I’m a very competitive person and there is keen rivalry and associated friendly banter between us when we are out there on the course together. I feel that that competitive nature has also served me well in my career in sales to date and will continue to do so.

I also enjoy spending time with family, fishing and working out at the gym to counter my time as an armchair sports person.

What for you was the best part of your first few weeks at TransQuip?

For me, it has been meeting and getting to know the team internally and also meeting the customers. I have been really impressed with the huge amount of knowledge and passion within the team here at TransQuip and I will be calling upon that regularly as I look to ensure I match up the right product/s with each customer that I meet. On that note, I have had really positive interaction each and every customer and it is clearly evident how good TransQuip’s name and reputation is out there in the market place amongst our existing clients.

What is your favourite quote?

One of my favourite quotes is; ‘Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard’.

What do you like about the culture and working at TransQuip?
A great team environment and everyone is extremely helpful, no matter what their own workload is like!

What are your career aspirations and goals?

To be the best that I can be and build strong relationships with TransQuip’s customers. I am also looking forward to expanding my knowledge around the industry and learning lots of new things along the way.

What do you enjoy outside of work?
I enjoy walking and general fitness, baking and spending time with my young family.

What for you was the best part of the last year at TransQuip?
Gaining employment with TransQuip and moving through from the Admin team to part of the internal sales team. Working at TransQuip has helped me gain more self-confidence and I am looking forward to what the future holds.

A little history:

I have worked within many different industries in various Customer Services/Sales Support roles for the past 20 years. Within this time I have bought,
done up and sold a couple of houses and just over two years ago we built our first house in rural Christchurch and we are loving the lifestyle this brings.

I am married, with two stepsons and we have a daughter together, so life outside of TransQuip is extremely busy.

With 2 staff members birthdays this week we felt it was time do something special, so the ‘International Lunch’ suggestion was taken up…

Given we have diverse team in the Christchurch branch from many different backgrounds including – English, Australian, South African, Maori, Auckland, Southland – and of course Cantabrian!

The team effort produced a table full of many interesting and scrumptious dishes. We were able to try each other’s foods and learn about the culture and background of each dish.

As one of the staff said… We were living our values: team contribution, leveraging our collective cooking skills,  sauseing quality products from all over the globe, so we all mutually prosper!

We have just spent the last two days doing the most mind blowing 6 caves - they were spectacular. The last one today freaked me out at roughly 500 metres long and most of it in waist deep water. For the last 50 metres we were in a narrow channel with your head just above water and the ceiling inches away from bumping your head and at the end of that channel you get to climb up and out into the daylight. It's an amazing feeling coming out into daylight again. The first one we did on Friday afternoon was called devil's cave, it was huge! Then some of them you had to squirm to get in and down the channels. I have no idea how some people can scuba dive into some of these. And I gotta tell you guys these adventure excursions would never happen in NZ with our health and safety rules! Lol. Apparently, we covered about 11km Saturday inside and outside walking to them but you don't realise because the adrenaline is pumping!

How long have you worked at TransQuip?
Almost a year. I have 23 years experience in sales, marketing and most recently the health and safety sector has been of major interest to me. I completed my Health and Safety level 1 training 2 years ago and since then I have been driven to improve standards of practice. I do think New Zealand has a ‘she’ll be right’ attitude towards safety standards. This is slowly improving but there is still room for education and engagement. I wanted to be part of the sales team here because I could see how my values aligned with the company values. At TransQuip, I feel honoured to get the opportunity to help our customers assess their health and safety needs. Every day is about ensuring everyone gets home safely to their loved ones.

I do think New Zealand has a ‘she’ll be right’ attitude towards safety standards. This is slowly improving but there is still room for education and engagement. What do you like about the culture and working at TransQuip?
All for one, one for all. Everyone works as a team here. It’s very rare to find an organisation where everyone just gets stuck in to get the job done to ensure our customers get outstanding service. The diversity in the team (all races, all religions) just make us even more effective.

What are your career aspirations and goals?
I am looking forward to being instrumental in the growth of TransQuip in the North Island. So much potential up here. I can’t wait to tap into new areas for expansion.

What do you enjoy outside of work? I strive for balance. I like to work hard, play hard. I am raising a blended family of four kids and a dog. Never a dull day in my household. When I am not working, I love doing CrossFit and strength training with my husband who is a level 1 CrossFit coach. I’m happiest when I am cooking chicken curry and listening to old jazz with a glass of Sauvignon Blanc in my hand.

What for you was the best part of the last year at TransQuip? Best part of working for TransQuip last year was starting our Facebook page and getting positive feedback from customers about our service. I was immensely proud to be part of a team that made life so much easier for customers who needed real gear, real fast! There was one customer who said “ You guys just saved my day”. So much satisfaction in hearing that.

What is your favourite quote?
I have two quotes I live by and I teach my kids to embrace this as well.

1) To know the dark is to appreciate the light.
2) Life is like a marathon. It does not matter if you finish first, second or last. What matters is that you reach the finish line.

Having spent the past 13 years hiring equipment into the Civil Works and Construction Industries I have settled in well and it’s really business as usual for me as I am dealing with the customer base I am well familiar with. Having the opportunity to now specialise in a product and as a market leader is a fantastic opportunity for me and one that I am relishing. I’m very fortunate to have some great products in our range which enables us to provide a shoring solution for most situations. I would welcome your enquiries and be happy to merely quote for supply or visit your site to recommend the best options for your application...

The hard working team here at Transquip are very professional and carry a strong work ethos. I have only been here for 2 months but it’s evident the culture here is one of honesty and ensuring the customers do receive the very best service either from visiting the stores or from dealing with Transquip remotely. We service the entire country from bases in both Islands with great products from our exclusive agencies.

Outside of work it is pretty much family, sport and socialising. These days I prefer to wander a golf course than to tear up and down a rugby field. It is less damaging to the body though the frustrations of improving my handicap can take its toll on the mind. Sport also allows me to have a couple of beers with a good bunch of mates. Diane and I have a large group of close friends and we have been through thick and thin together.

To start with I want to visit contractors up and down the country as often as I can. If I have not been to see you yet it’s just because there are so many of you out there. I do intend, to but if you wanted to touch base before that please just sing out.

TransQuip... the Journey from 1973 until now!

Why? Service, integrity, care, humour, timeliness, professionalism, accuracy… All for People! Our Customers, our Staff, our Suppliers and the Community at large.

It all started in the middle of 1994. We had this inspiration of starting a business selling truck and machinery
mirrors...

It all started in the middle of 1994. We had this inspiration of starting a business selling truck and machinery
mirrors. Before that we had been in the auto and truck repair business, opening up a garage in 1973 near
Rangiora. As with most small town mechanic shops we serviced and repaired cars, trucks, tractors and
machinery. The business grew and our sons, Richard, Mark and Lincoln, all grew into it.

We wanted a change, so took the big step of selling shatterproof mirrors to transport and machinery operators.
Of course they were a great product to sell - but not being breakable, meant we had very little repeat business!
So next came standard glass mirrors used in the industry, then came all sorts of other associated products like
truck and safety lighting, alloy loading ramps and so on.

With Lincoln and myself now full time in this part of the business, we decided to sell the garage and all concentrate
on the TransQuip side of the business. We sold Motorwell Services in 2002 and moved to the new TransQuip
premises in Rangiora.

Along the way, we were growing and adding products and continuing to service our great customers, many of whom
have come along this journey with us, and whom we owe so much to. One of the main products we took on was a
system of trench shoring. This ticked along until the earthquakes came. Of course with Canterbury shaking like it was,
no one would go into a trench without protection. The demand for these was tremendous and our Rangiora premises
became too small, so we leased some land in Christchurch, and set up 2 containers and a yard, mainly to give our
customer’s better service with the trench shoring.

The property that we are now in came up for sale and we purchased that in 2012. This is in an excellent location with
many of our Christchurch customers being in the Hornby and Sockburn areas. As well, we are near to the main courier
and freight companies which are very important for dispatching our products throughout NZ quickly.

We have good growth at times and also many challenges along the way. As all of our customers would know, the present
business environment is fraught with challenges, as well as with many opportunities. At TransQuip, we are looking these
challenges in the eye and enthusiastically moving forward to give you - the customer, excellence and quality in products and service.

We have a great team of 17 now, with Bonnie the first of the next generation starting with us when school finishes this year. She will be in the office so keep an eye on this space. As already mentioned, we couldn’t have progressed this far without our great team of loyal customers, and our fantastic team of staff. You will be hearing about them in future posts.

Our market is New Zealand; small, medium and large companies, YOU as customers are the most important part of our
business. We love hearing from YOU, as YOU are part of our business. You may have heard of a new product that could make things more efficient for your business. Give us a call as we source from all around the globe. Or it might be that something hasn’t gone quite right and we need to change something. We love to hear back from you, as if we don’t know
- we can’t do anything to improve our systems. Feedback, Feedback, Feedback, yes, we need it constantly, so don’t hold back. Communicate with us!

Finally, as the year is drawing to a close and with THE SEASON coming upon us again we would like to say a big THANK YOU for doing business with TransQuip. We wish you, your staff and families all the best and look forward to 2016 as a prosperous and happy new year!
