How to: Assemble Guardian Lightweight Aluminium Trench Shields

Huntley and Harley, Guardian's trench shield experts, have made a short video that shows just how quick and easy it is to put together one of the handiest pieces of kit ever to ride on the back of a ute: Guardian Lightweight Aluminium Trench Shields.

Watch it here, or read below, and we'll break it down for you.

You'll need two people to assemble these.

  1. Guardian Lightweight Aluminium Trench Shields. (Huntley and Harley demonstrated using two 2.4 x 1.2 metre panels and 0.6-0.9 metre struts.)
  2. Struts
  3. Pins
  4. R clips
  5. Your hi-vis safety wear and work gloves (Huntley and Harley used cut-proof gloves for the job but it's down to personal choice. Quality safety gloves are available from TransQuip - Browse our range Here)

Total Assembly Time: Approx. 10 minutes

How To:

  1. Lift the first panel off the ute and place it on the ground, outward side down.
  2. Attach two struts in the locations required.
  3. Lift the panel and place it upright, along its length. The struts will hold it at an angle with the ground, supporting its weight.
  4. Lift the second panel off the ute and put in down opposite the first panel.
  5. With one person at each end, manoeuvre the second panel into place.
  6. Join the panels using the struts and secure using the pins and R clips.
  7. To adjust the width, the G loop pin will drop into place when the strut is in position then tighten using the large nut with the handle. (The G loop locks the struts in place - preventing them from moving in and out.)
  8. Job done!

  • Easily handled by two people, the Guardian 2.4m x 1.2m (2301) is one of New Zealand's most widely used lightweight aluminium trench shields
  • Each panel weighs about 55kgs and the struts 7kgs each. The completed set, with struts in place, will weigh about 140kgs.
  • Completed sets can easily be lifted into place using a small (1.7 tonne) digger.
  • The shield set demonstrated is rated 20kPa. This can be increased by adding further struts at specific locations, as indicated on the use sticker displayed on every panel.
  • Struts are available in a range of sizes. 0.6 to 0.9m and 1-1.8m are the most common. But larger sizes are available, along with custom made sizes. (Please ask about the lead times and costs.)
  • Spare pins are available from TransQuip if damaged or lost.
  • Guardian Lightweight Aluminium Trench Shields are available for sale or hire.
  • Certified to Australian and New Zealand standards for manhole shoring, the trench shields are suited to all soil types, from sand to clay.
  • Design certificate standards are printed on a plate on each panel.
