Directional flashing lights. What you need to know.
Directional flashing lights play an important role in keeping vehicles visible in busy, high risk environments. They are commonly used on service vehicles, pilot vehicles, and fleets operating on roads and active worksites where clear warning signals matter. In the video below, we walk through the TransQuip Directional Flashing Light range and show how these lights are designed to work in real conditions.
Smaller profile, easier fitment
Directional flashing lights have become more compact over time. Modern units feature a low profile design that makes them easier to install and less intrusive on the vehicle. This allows them to be mounted neatly into grilles, panels, or windows without compromising visibility or vehicle appearance.
A smaller footprint also means greater flexibility when fitting multiple lights or working around existing vehicle components.
Bright output where it counts
Despite their compact size, directional flashing lights deliver strong, high visibility output. They are designed to be seen clearly in daylight, low light, and poor weather conditions, ensuring warning signals are not missed in busy or fast moving environments.
Brightness is critical for safety, especially when vehicles are working close to traffic or people.
Smarter functionality on site and on road
Directional flashing lights are built to work together. Multiple units can be synchronised to flash at the same time or set to alternate, depending on how they are wired. This allows fitters to create clear, consistent warning patterns across the vehicle.
Most directional flashing lights are multi voltage, making them suitable for both 12 volt and 24 volt vehicles without modification.
They are also designed for demanding conditions, with sealed housings that are dustproof and waterproof, and built to be radio interference free. This is important for maintaining reliable vehicle communications and avoiding issues with other electronics.
Built to recognised standards
Quality directional flashing lights meet recognised standards such as SAE Class 1 and ECE R10. These standards help ensure the lights perform reliably and meet compliance requirements for road and site use.
Colour options are available across the range, including red, white, blue, green, and magenta. Magenta is commonly used on over dimension pilot vehicles where specific visibility requirements apply.
Multiple mounting options for different needs
Most directional flashing lights offer multiple flash patterns that can be selected during installation by wiring configuration. This allows the signal to be matched to the application, whether it is roadside work, site access control, or escort duties.
For temporary use, window mounted directional lights are available. These units can be fitted to the front or rear window and powered via a cigarette lighter plug, making them a practical option for short term requirements or shared vehicles. Flash patterns and operation are controlled via simple in line switches. Check them out HERE.
The same units can also be permanently mounted using a supplied bracket, giving flexibility as fleet needs change. Longer versions are available for applications requiring increased visibility, including pilot and escort vehicles.
